For Professionals
HIP methodology documentation, scoring dimensions, Regenerative Index, and technical resources for researchers, procurement teams, and retail buyers.
HIP Methodology v1.5
The current methodology version is v1.5. It defines the scoring model, dimension weights, band thresholds, and the Regenerative Index scale.
Scoring Dimensions
The HIP Score (0–10) is composed of seven weighted dimensions:
- Material Scarcity Index — how abundant or at-risk are the raw materials?
- Supply Chain Risk — how traceable and resilient is the supply chain?
- Recyclability & Circularity — can materials be recovered at end of life?
- Repairability — can the product be repaired and maintained?
- Social & Environmental Impact — what is the social and environmental footprint?
- Product Longevity — how long is the product designed to last?
- Regenerative Index — does the product deplete or restore natural capital?
The Regenerative Index
Inside the HIP Score sits the Regenerative Index (RI) — a unique scale from −10 to +10 that distinguishes products depleting finite reserves from those actively rebuilding natural capital.
| Band | Range | Meaning |
|---|---|---|
| Depleting | −10 to −6 | Actively drawing down finite material reserves |
| Extractive | −5 to −1 | Net material consumer, limited recovery |
| Renewable | 0 | Material equilibrium — input matches recovery |
| Restorative | +1 to +5 | Net material restorer, partial regeneration |
| Regenerative | +6 to +10 | Actively rebuilding natural capital |
Most consumer products today sit below zero.

Published Ratings
All published ratings — Category Baselines and manufacturer-verified assessments — are publicly available.
For Retailers and Buyers
If you are a retailer, procurement officer, or buying team evaluating products for your range:
- Category ratings show the baseline material resilience of a product type — useful for benchmarking and category-level risk assessment
- Verified ratings for specific products provide independently assessed, citable evidence for procurement decisions
- The HIP Mark (Standard, Silver, Gold) provides a simple, consumer-facing signal that a product has met a verified threshold
- Pricing and service terms are published transparently — see our schedule of fees

Verified Ratings for Manufacturers
Manufacturers can commission a Verified Rating to have their specific product assessed against the category baseline using actual product data.
Dispute and Correction
If you believe a published rating contains an error or is based on outdated information, we have a formal dispute and correction process.
