HIP Methodology v1.5
The current methodology version is v1.5. It defines the scoring model, dimension weights, band thresholds, and the Regenerative Index scale.
Scoring Dimensions
The HIP Score (0–10) is composed of seven weighted dimensions:
- Material Scarcity Index — how abundant or at-risk are the raw materials?
- Supply Chain Risk — how traceable and resilient is the supply chain?
- Recyclability & Circularity — can materials be recovered at end of life?
- Repairability — can the product be repaired and maintained?
- Social & Environmental Impact — what is the social and environmental footprint?
- Product Longevity — how long is the product designed to last?
- Regenerative Index — does the product deplete or restore natural capital?
The Regenerative Index
Inside the HIP Score sits the Regenerative Index (RI) — a unique scale from −10 to +10 that distinguishes products depleting finite reserves from those actively rebuilding natural capital.

| Extractive | −5 to −1 | Net material consumer, limited recovery |
| Renewable | 0 | Material equilibrium — input matches recovery |

| Regenerative | +6 to +10 | Actively rebuilding natural capital |

Category Ceilings
What is a category ceiling?
A ceiling rating shows the best HIP score a product in a given category can achieve when the manufacturer shares full evidence about materials, supply chain, repairs, and end-of-life design.
Ceilings are benchmarks — not products on sale today. They set the target that verified ratings measure against.
