The deadline that arrives this month

On 31 July 2026, the transposition deadline for the EU's Right to Repair Directive (2024/1799) arrives. From that point, EU member states must have national rules in force that give manufacturers of everyday products — washing machines, dishwashers, fridges, vacuum cleaners, phones, tablets, electronic displays — a standing duty to repair. Not just during the warranty. Spare parts at a reasonable price. Repair information published on a free-access website. The obligation even reaches back to products already sold.

If you make or import any of those products, the clock on this particular deadline runs out this month. But here's the part that matters more: right-to-repair is not the finish line. It's the starting gun.

A decade of material-resilience law, not a single deadline

Look at what's already scheduled behind the Right to Repair Directive, and a pattern emerges — Europe is steadily writing the durability, repairability and material-origin of products into law:

  • 19 July 2026 — the Ecodesign for Sustainable Products Regulation (ESPR) ban on destroying unsold clothing and footwear took effect for large enterprises. Product-specific rules roll out from here: iron and steel from 2026; aluminium, textiles and tyres from 2027.
  • 18 February 2027 — the first Digital Product Passports become mandatory, starting with EV and industrial batteries. Textiles follow around 2028–29, furniture and electronics around 2029–30. Each passport carries machine-readable data on material composition, recycled content, repairability and supply-chain traceability.
  • 2030 — the Critical Raw Materials Act benchmarks bite: domestic targets for extraction, processing and recycling of strategic materials, plus a cap of 65% of any strategic material sourced from a single third country.
  • August 2031, then 2036 — the EU Battery Regulation's recycled-content mandates step up in two waves.

Read top to bottom, that's not a one-off compliance event. It's a decade-long tightening of what "a well-made product" is legally required to mean. Right-to-repair is simply the first wave to make landfall.

Where material resilience fits

The themes regulators are now codifying — durability, repairability, material origin, circularity — are the same themes HIP has been scoring against a category baseline all along. Assessing where a product stands today is a practical step toward being ready for where the rules are heading.

The one thing regulation still doesn't measure

There's a gap even this decade of law leaves open. Every regulation on that timeline asks whether a product meets a floor — is it repairable enough, recyclable enough, does it declare enough. None of them ask whether a product's materials give back more than they take.

That's what HIP's Regenerative Index does, and it's unique: no current EU or UK regulation scores products on a depleting-to-regenerative spectrum. The Regenerative Index runs from Depleting through Extractive, Renewable and Restorative to Regenerative — a beyond-compliance signal that rewards manufacturers who are ahead of where regulation is heading, precisely because the law hasn't caught up yet.

Don't wait for the wave you can see

The Right to Repair deadline is the visible one this month. The rest of the decade is already on the calendar. Manufacturers who treat 31 July as a single hurdle will be back at the drawing board for every wave that follows. The ones who understand where their products stand on material resilience now — repairability, longevity, material origin, circularity — are building the muscle for all of it.

The clock is running. It won't stop at July.
